Perseverance
Gratitude As A Top Strength:
If Gratitude is your top strength you are aware of the good things that happen to you, and you never take them for granted. Your friends and family members know that you are a grateful person because you always take the time to express your thanks.
Virtue Category:
Gratitude falls under the virtue category of Transcendence. Transcendence describes strengths that provide a broad sense of connection to something higher in meaning and purpose than ourselves.
Key Concepts:
There are two types of gratitude:
§  Benefit-triggered gratitude= the state that follows when a desired benefit is received from a benefactor.
§  Generalized gratitude= the state resulting from awareness and appreciation of what is valuable and meaningful to yourself.
There are two stages of gratitude:
§  Acknowledging the goodness in your life.
§  Recognizing the source of this goodness is outside yourself.
Exercises For Boosting Gratitude:
§  Write down three good thing that you are grateful for each day.
§  Over dinner, talk with your loved ones about two good things that happened to them during the day.
§  Set aside at least ten minutes every day to savor a pleasant experience.

Perseverance
Gratitude is the appreciation for the benefits we receive from others, and the desire to reciprocate.
Those who demonstrate gratitude—and those who don’t—see life differently. Individuals demonstrating gratitude tend to emphasize language related to gifts, givers, blessings, blessed, fortune, fortunate, and abundance. Individuals who don’t demonstrate gratitude, on the other hand, tend to focus on deprivation, deservingness, regrets, lack, need, scarcity, and loss. For instance, a grateful person might say, “I get to go to class today,” whereas an ungrateful person might say, “Why do I have to learn all this useless stuff?”

Gratitude

Gratitude is an emotion expressing appreciation for what one has—as opposed to, for example, a consumer-driven emphasis on what one wants. Gratitude is getting a great deal of attention as a facet of positive psychology.

Perseverance

When you look at the list of 24 VIA (Values in Action) Strengths, you’ll see that perseverance is also associated with industriousness and diligence because the three traits are so similar in the real world.  Here’s a definition ofperseverance from Dr. Seligman that gives a clear picture of it:

“You finish what you start.  The industrious person takes on difficult projects and finishes them, ‘getting it out the door, with good cheer and minimal complaints.  You do what you say you will do and sometimes more, never less.”

If that describes you, congratulations!  Perseverance is probably one of your signature strengths.  But if, like me, finishing what you start takes genuine effort and determination, don’t give up hope.

Grit

Grit is a combination of passion and persistence. Having grit means pursuing your goal with vigor and focus over an extended period of time. Less gritty individuals are easily discouraged or frequently led off track by new interests.
Being gritty means:
Finishing what you begin
Staying committed to your goals
Working hard even after experiencing failure or when you feel like quitting
Sticking with a project or activity for more than a few weeks
